Suggestions and Tips for a Successful Spelling Bee:
¨  Set the date early so your Club Bee winners can participate in the Regional Bee well before the February deadline.
¨  Form a Spelling Bee committee with at least 4 people on the team.
**
Make it fun! Ask for donations of refreshments, giveaways, anything that will help enhance
your event. These are 4th and 5th graders!!!  Spelling is fun!

¨  Some clubs hold separate Bees for fourth and fifth graders.  This is a good idea when there are many schools participating and therefore many students.   The sample letters to contestants and alternates are written for both situations. You can use the same letter, just edit it to conform to how your club is running your Bee.
¨      Limit the number of contestants to about 30 to 40 kids. The Bee should not take an excessively long time to complete.
¨   Expect your event to last about 2 hours and plan accordingly.
¨      On the day of the event, open the doors 1 hour before starting time for registration.  Begin the Bee promptly and don't wait for "no shows".
¨   Offer 10 minute bathroom breaks after every three rounds.  Remind contestants that the Bee will resume promptly after the allotted time.
¨  Tape record the Bee in case there is a dispute over what has been heard.  The State Bee is recorded on two machines.
